Hit and run unattended

My son, 17 yrs old, hit a car and left the scene without reporting it. there was a witness and he reported it to the police. The police called and talk to my son about the hit and run incident and apologised for the incident. we called the owner of the car, my son apologised, and also reported it to our insurance and have his car repaired. The incident happened october 2005. We thought everything was settled untill we received summons to report to district court, for a hearing and the charged is Hit and Run Unattended. We don't know what to do or to expect. Please help. we live in Washington State, Kitsap county
