Can lawyers be held acountable for their actions?

My child was charged with murder a while back. The lawyer representing him allowed evidence to be omitted, allowed the prosecutor to drop charges and refile on the same charges, keeping my child locked up for an entire year. the attorney accepted evidence from me that was found at the scene and didn't turn it over to the prosecutor until the person who found it informed the prosecutor, then he had me use another attorney to turn the evidence over to the prsecutor. Immediately after this discovery he sent an ex judge to jail to advise my child what he would do if he were the judge on the bench, cohersing my child to change the plea from not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. I have just recently obtained what is supposed to be his complete file (with POA.) However the testimony that was supposed to be included by an expert, that the lawyer told us could show evidence that could have caused the accident, has dissapeared, (According to the lawyer). I have no Idea what I am looking for so I have no idea what other informationmay have been withheld (except all the notes made by his personal assistant).
Do we have the right to go after the attorney for the amount that the receipt indicates the attorney paid to this expert witness?
Is ther any legal action we can take against the attorney?
Have my child's rights been violated?
